I believe in the old saying which says that "if you like what you do, then you never have to work a day in your life."
But have you ever felt discouraged with work or the amount of work that needs to be done? When I feel that way, I am sometimes tempted to spend extra hours in the office or take work home...or take out my anxiety and stress on someone else (poor guy).
If you are feeling that way right now, then I suggest that you take a deep breath and take a break. What could be so important that it has to be accomplished right at this moment? At least that's what I tell myself...
And I remember that work is about making decisions, creating value and having a purpose that is not just meaningful to me but also glorifying to God...that work is for God and His glory not mine. If I take work home and am unable to spend time with my family, interacting with them, that doesn't seem glorying to You isn't it. And let's not talk about my temper getting out of hand when there is tons of work...
It's easy to make an excuse that we over work because we want to provide for our family, our spouse and their needs...but its not really about that isn't it.
Often times, it is about our own selfishness...our egos wanting to be fed with what the world calls success. Little do we know that this type of success - the fame and fortune kind can and will rob us of our joy.
This worldly successes are at best a temporary respite or fleeting reward for the hard work that we do. Instead of pursuing true joy which comes from knowing that we have been good stewards of what You as our God have given us, regardless of whether we have been given much or little.
Lord, I pray that you help me remember that my work here on earth is one that is focused on giving glory to You. My focus on doing work should be You, so that I may be filled with the joy and peace that is beyond human understanding, as You are a loving and generous God that provides for all my needs. Amen.
